SERDANG, 30 August – Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Berhad (CGC) sponsored a rugby tournament in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, and Home of Warriors Rugby Club (HOW) on the eve of our 61st Hari Merdeka celebration.
The CGC Merdeka Midnight Rugby Meet is part of the Ministry’s Merdeka Carnival and it is special because this is CGC’s first sport based corporate responsibility.
“CGC is proud and honoured to sponsor this rugby tournament which coincides with the 61st Merdeka Day celebration. Sports unite people, builds teams and promotes healthy living. There are similarities in core values promoted by sports and CGC’s key principles. Sports promotes teamwork, requires commitment, builds integrity, and nurtures talent. These elements represent CGC’s values and our mission to grow and nurture MSEMs (micro, small and medium enterprises),” said President/CEO, Datuk Mohd Zamree Mohd Ishak.
The CGC Merdeka Midnight Rugby Meet was graced by YB Tuan Eddin Syazlee Shith, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang. Over 500 people, including CGC Management, staff and their families, alumni members of 10 prestigious schools, students and public were present and showed their support at the rugby tournament.
The 10 participating teams are ALSPEN Stingers RC (Alumni SMS Tun Syed Shahabudin, Penang), Edwardian Legends (Alumni SM King Edward VII, Perak), KKB Vets (Alumni SM Kuala Kubu Baru), MCOBA Vets (Alumni Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Perak), OPA (Alumni Royal Military College, KL), SAJOHA Vets (Alumni Sekolah Sains Johor), SDAR Vets (Alumni Sekolah Datuk Abdul Razak, Negeri Sembilan), SMSSOB (Alumni SM Sains Selangor), STJ HOW (Alumni SM Sains Tuanku Jaafar, Negeri Sembilan) and VI Legends (Alumni Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur).
President of HOW and Organising Committee Chairman, Megat Mohammad Faisal Khir Johari said the club is honoured to have CGC on-board as the title sponsor of this veteran rugby tournament.
Malaysia is ranked 48th by the World Rugby Organisation and it is the most popular sport among top schools in Malaysia. In fact, many primary and secondary schools across the country have also started establishing rugby clubs.
“The rugby alumni play an important role in the development of the sport in the country. HOW and other alumni, especially ex ruggers, assist their respective school teams by organising coaching sessions and raising funds for rugby teams to participate in local and international rugby competitions. As majority of our alumni members are professionals and entrepreneurs, the collaboration with CGC bodes well since CGC is committed to develop small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” Megat explained.
The rugby tournament was fun-drenched with various activities such as face painting and a clown-show for the young spectators. The fun night saw Malaysians from different walks of life coming together at the rugby tournament for the 61st Merdeka celebration countdown. At CGC, Merdeka is a show of patriotism and love for the nation, a belief shared by over 500 employees.
